About the Workshop and its participants

On the initiative of His Excellency Ambassador Gilberto Da Piedade Verissimo, President of the Economic Commission of Central African States (ECCAS), a workshop on "The status of the experience of electoral commissions in the ECCAS space, 30 years on" was convened in Brazzaville at the GHS La Coupole Hotel on Wednesday 4 November 2021.

This workshop, supported by the Embassy of Sweden, is an integral part of EISA's Strengthening Democracy in Africa programme.

The workshop brought together all presidents of the eleven election management bodies and two members of civil society organisations from all the ECCAS countries.

Aims of the Workshop

The main objective of the workshop was to revisit three decades of the function of electoral commissions of ECCAS member states looking at and discussing:

  • The achievements of electoral commissions during the period concerned
  • The setbacks experienced in this period.
  • The difficulties the electoral commissions have had to face.
  • New perspectives of electoral commissions in Central Africa.
  • How can the forum of electoral commissions in Central Africa be revitalised?
